Protect yourself with the right food!

We live in a society where most people are in fear for their health. Cancer and other degenerative diseases are spreading extremely fast and news about our relatives and friends that developed such diseases are not of a suprise anymore. We feel unarmed infront of those frightening events. However, what we should really ask ourselves  is:

“Why do we develope these diseases, especially so fast?” and even Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves?”

Well, I can tell you that the good news is already written in the tagline  above:

Our genes are not our destiny!

This could sound controversial and I can already hear you thinking: “But these are my genes!” Yes, but let me explain something. For many years, scientists were attached to the idea that our RNA (ribonucleic acid), was just a copy of our DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). So, since DNA contains the instructions for the cell to grow, function and replicate, while the RNA carries out those instructions, in this case our RNA would have simply copied that information provided by DNA. So, this would than actually have meant that if I have had a genetic predisposition for a certain disease, I would have obviously developed that disease and end of story, my genes would have been my destiny and I would  be stuck there hoping in God’s help. However, in 2004, scientists carried out their main project called the Human Genome Project, where they discovered about 25.000 genes and the fact that these genes do react to something and the something was the environmental factors, such as pollution, smoking, excessive exposure to UV rays, prolonged stress, pesticides in food, radiation, crap food and others. These factors have the power to interfere with our genetic expression and these changes underlie the disease.

How do these factors interfere with our genetic expression?

Gene expression is a regulated process that allows a cell to respond to its changing environment. In this process, DNA is first copied into RNA, which can then switch on and off to control when proteins are made and also the volume of the amount of proteins made. So, genetic expression is the key step involved in making a protein, transcription and translation. But how does this work? Genetic expression is changed by genetic tags such as methyl tags. By putting these tags on and off, you activate or suppress the expression of genes. One cause of faulty methylation is the damage caused by free radicals or oxidants. And do you know what creates a massive amount of free radicals in our body? The above mentioned environmental factors! As simple as that! Free radicals are unstable molecules with unpaired electrons. They are free and irregular, because they are missing a critical electron. What they do in our body, they injure our cells damaging our DNA. A mutated cell grows abnormally and rapidly. A cell that reproduces with damaged DNA produces an imperfect copy of itself, whose proliferation can lead to chronic health issues. A free radical steals an electron from neighbouring molecule. This causes the affected molecule to become a free radical itself. And this chain continues and leads to premature ageing and many degenerative disease including cancer.

There is a way to interrupt this chain

We cannot change the world we live in. We obviously cannot migrate to a secluded island trying to escape the polluted environment we live in, but we can certainly give up smoking, do some physical activity or even better…we can protect ourselves wih the right food. You have obviously already heard about antioxidants and their healthy effect on our organism. A good source of trusted information can be surely found on https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2841576/

However, I do have to underline here that when we talk about health we need to stick to the scientific data we have available. That means to what is certain, because we simply cannot let our health to be based on hypothetical theories. There are many so called healhy foods arounds, but there are 33 essential antioxidants and 30 phytochemicals that have proven scientific effects on our organism. There are many more, but only these ones have scientific ground based on proofs. Do you want to know how these foods interact with those free radicals? They, the antioxidants, which are molecules, will simply donate an extra electron to the free radical, neutralizing it. So, the chain would then stop. For example, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the main polyphenol found in green tea can prevent cancer, because it inhibits faulty methylation and reactivates cancer-fighting genes. And many others do it in a similar way. So as said, there are 33 antioxidants and the 30 phytochemicals with proven scientific effect. You have to make sure that you include them all in your 30 day mealplan in order to have a general protection.

How do you know where to find them

There is a good news here too. The book Protect your DNA with the right food http://healthynutritioncoach.com/shop/my-new-book-is-a-30-day-nutritional-programme-with-recipes/ contains not only a detailed explanation about the DNA damage, but also the list of all the foods with the essential nutrients and this will help you to construct your diet properly. For example, among other factors let’s say you will have to introduce sources of Magnesium in your daily meals and it may be possible that you do not like certain foods and you prefer others. But how do you know what to chose? Well, good sources of Magnesium are in pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, wheat germ, almonds, cashew nuts, brewer’s yeast, buckwheat flour, Brazil nuts, peanuts, pecan nuts, cooked beans, garlic, raisins, green peas, potato with skin, etc. So, let’s say you do not like nuts or seeds you would then make sure you add raisins or beans that day on your plate or simply make sure you had your potatos with the skin. This was just an example of the over 60 essential nutrients that you will simply want to have in your 30 day mealplan.

How to combine those nutrients in the right way

The book contains that too. It has 90 quick-to-prepare recipes, so you will not have to worry about that. All the essential nutrients are included in your 30 day melplan. You just have to cook a little bit and enjoy your meal!
